IDTA Tap Champ & All The Rest!

2017-02-19-scholarships-06

Well our Berry Babes never fail to impress us and make us silly with pride. Our Sheffield dance school had 10 pupils nominated to perform at the IDTA Theatre Dance Awards in Manchester last weekend for their storming performances in their grade exams.

2017-02-19-scholarships-07

To be invited to dance at this prestigious event is an achievement in itself, and we were thrilled to have the following pupils be nominated for these grades:

Advanced 2 Modern – Rebecca Hanneman, Alexandra O’Brien, Charlotte Stones, Bridie Thorpe
Advanced 1 Theatre Craft – Rebecca Hanneman, Alexandra O’Brien, Bree Quinton, Charlotte Stones, Bridie Thorpe
Advanced 1 Ballet – Bree Quinton
Intermediate Theatre Craft – Eve Wainwright
Grade 5 Modern Jazz – Ewan Revill, Liberty Shepherd, Jack Skelton, Eve Wainwright
Grade 5 Tap – Jack Skelton
Grade 4 Theatre Craft – Ewan Revill, Gabriel Sharrock, Jack Skelton

Our pupils worked very hard and danced their socks off, with Liberty and Eve making it to be Modern Jazz Grades finalists and Jack taking his place in the Theatre Craft Grades finals.

We were also delighted to see Rebecca and Bridie being recalled to dance in the Modern Jazz Performers finals, with Bridie earning a Special Commendation. Bree made it to the Theatre Craft Performers final and also earned a Special Commendation.

Our very own Mr Tap himself: Jack Skelton, IDTA Tap Grades Winner 2017

However, the icing on the cake for a fabulous weekend has got to be our very own Jack Skelton, who stormed to victory in the Tap Grades category! Jack is our third overall winner at the IDTA Theatre Awards, following Charlotte Stones in the Tap Grades of 2014 and Bree Quinton in the Modern Jazz Performers of 2016.

This is an absolutely huge achievement and very well deserved. Jack’s year can only get better as his performing and dance skills will take him on to Dance Master UK 2017, the lead part of Cosmo Brown in Singin’ in the Rain at the City Hall in May and the lead of Troy Bolton in Ecclesfield’s production of High School Musical.

Jack and some very proud teachers: Miss Lois, Miss Rebecca & Miss Marie

We are immensely proud of all our pupils who represented the school and we congratulate them on a successful weekend.

Happy 18th Birthday Bree!

The first of our Senior girls is stepping into the world of legal drinking today as our lovely Bree Ella Quinton turns 18.

dsc_0028Bree began dancing at our school at the ripe age of 3 years old when her mum and former pupil Stacy brought her along. Her distinguished dance career had its humble beginnings from her first appearance as a little chicken in Our Favourite Things 2002 at the University Drama Studio and her first competition dance age 4 to Out of Town, to the heights (so far) of performing as a Semi-Finalist in Miss Dance of Great Britain 2016 and winning the IDTA’s Modern Jazz Performer Award.

Bree has been nominated to compete in the IDTA’s Theatre Dance Awards every year since 2012, and in 2015 was the first pupil in the school’s history to get nominated in all four disciplines in the same year: Ballet, Tap, Theatre Craft & Modern Jazz.
We were particularly overwhelmed with pride earlier this year when Bree performed at the IDTA’s Theatre Dance Awards, the blue ribbon event of our dancing world, to win the Modern Jazz Performers Award. She was asked to represent the IDTA at the Theatre Dance Council International’s British Championships.

Some familiar faces here… Bree Back Row Centre

Recently, Miss Quinton took 5th place at Danum White Rose Championships in the Ballet category while also making it through to the semi-finals of the Song & Dance section.

Over her time with us, Bree has performed on both Sheffield Theatres’ stages, appearing in pantomimes from the age of 7 at the Lyceum and also appearing in the Crucible’s production of Kes in 2014.

History repeats itself – Bree’s first competition trio, Sunny Side of the Street… coincidentally her mum’s first trio too.

By June 2017, Bree will also have had the honour and achievement of competing in Miss Dance of Great Britain three times. We will be delighted to support her and Jack there next June.

For the time being, Bree is concentrating on her A Levels and applying for dance colleges. Happy 18th Birthday Miss Quinton, you’ve given us a lifetime of proud and happy memories, and we hope you go on to create more.

Dance Wear

dsc_0797-001

For girls, we recommend leggings/tights and a leotard. For boys, cycle shorts/leggings and a t-shirt.

If you are a new starter with us, there is no rush to buy leotards or dance shoes. However, if you have been attending class for 3/4 weeks or more, your child will need a pair of ballet shoes and a pair of tap shoes.

Dancewear and shoes can be found at both dance stores and online shops. Locally, there are the following shops:

High Green Gymnastics – Paces Centre, High Green
Arabesque – Woodseats
Dance Ability – Rotherham

Online, Dance Direct has a wide selection on offer. We would however recommend getting shoes fitted in person (at least for the first time) because all shoes differ according to brand.

Alternatively, at class we have some second hand shoes available at a very reduced price. Please see one of us for further details.

Snow White and the Seven Dwarves

2016.06.20Many a congratulation to our pupils who are now part of the juvenile chorus in Sheffield Theatres and Evolution Pantomimes’ production of Snow White and the Seven Dwarves.

Maddie Dunn, Maisie Ganley, Lucy Holcroft, Megan Moore, Leila Steer, Megan Thorpe, Lilli Walker, Renée Warren and Aliyah Xaba will be pounding the floorboards this Christmas at the Sheffield Lyceum alongside panto favourite Damian Williams and Coronation Street’s Wendi Peters.

Well done to all the girls who auditioned for the show, you all continue to do us very proud.

Making a Song & Dance about it…
Congratulations to Eva and Aliyah for taking first and second place in their Song & Dance category. Charlotte Stones, Rebecca, Bree and Alexandra O’Brien took home 2nd, 3rd and joint 4th for their performances.

2016.03.18 Goldthorpe 06

All That Modern Jazz
Our E pupils took their fair share of medals home with Eve Wainwright, Emily Gay, Liberty Shepherd and Jack Skelton winning 1st, 2nd and joint 4th. There were lots of prizes in other age groups as Lilli Walker and Maisie took home a gold each, while Gabriel Sharrock and Megan Thorpe received 3rd and 4th.  Well done to Alycia Mayfield for achieving 2nd place in her section.

It Takes Two…
Our Juniors did very well with their Modern Duets, Fred & Barney (a.k.a Megan Bridger and Evie Wright) were placed 2nd, while our Aladdin team (Isabel Adshead and Abigail Bridger) tied for 3rd place with Lazytown (Isabel & Laylah Xaba), and the lovely Coen Quinton and Neve rounded it off with 4th place.

Baby Steps
Holding up the adorable end of the dancing school were our youngest performers. They danced very well and we were so proud! Well done to Maisie Berry for taking part in her first ever dance competition… we’re sure Nana was impressed. Another well done to Hannah Braithwaite and Hebe-Rose Burton who took home 3rd place in Modern, not forgetting little sister Abi Braithwaite, who wasn’t left out – she took 4th place.2016.03.17 Goldthorpe 02 Baby Modern

Teamwork makes the dream work
Our comp highlight this year have got to be the following. Following a win from the Inter troupes last week, our Seniors made sure they rounded off the festival in style! Performing in rather diminished numbers due to a little asthma attack, our Berry Babes not only achieved 4th place with Jai Ho, but won this main event with their fantastic performance of Too Darn Hot. Well done everyone.

And the winner is…
No trophy ceremony is complete without some Berry School representation! Congratulations to Bree Quinton for Most Outstanding Performance and to Ewan Revill for taking home Most Promising Boy. The cherry on top of our weekend however was the very talented Miss Emily Gay, who won the festival’s Senior Bursary prize! Very well done.

See you at the Scholarships!

We’ve had another very successful round of IDTA examinations and the results are in! Well done to everyone who took Grade 3 Tap and Intermediate Theatre Craft – you have maintained the school’s 100% pass rate and achieved a fabulous set of marks.

A very special mention to Eve Wainwright, who has been nominated for her Intermediate Theatre Craft, and will take part in the IDTA Theatre Dance Awards in Manchester next February in the Performers’ Category! Eve recently took part in the scholarships a month ago for Grade 4 Modern Jazz and Grade 5 Theatre Craft.
