Miss Dance 2017 – Charlotte Qualifies

DSC_0928 (2)-001Congrats, congrats and more congrats to our lovely Charlotte Stones who last week qualified for Miss Dance of Great Britain 2017, the International Dance Teachers’ Association‘s annual competition, bringing 55 of the best dancers in the country together in a celebration of all things glitz, glam and stretched feet!

Charlotte Miss Dance

Charlotte has again qualified with her Tap number, Little Lautette, a charming dance delivered in a sea of orange and pink sequins, making this her second time appearing on Blackpool’s Winter Gardens stage.

We can’t wait to cheer her on as she joins Rebecca, Alex, Bree & Jack (Dance Master) representing our Sheffield dance school in June. Well done Charlotte!

Matt Flies to Agrabah

Matthew Croke

We’re thrilled to say that former pupil Matthew Croke has landed the lead role in Disney Theatrical Production‘s Aladdin at the Prince Edward Theatre in London’s West End!

Matt will join the current cast and star as Aladdin himself opposite former Sugababe Jade Ewan as Jasmine and Trevor Dion Thomas playing the Genie. This immensely popular magical musical opened last June 2016 and Matthew will take on the role on 5th June.

In addition to his professional musical theatre career, Matt has been a part-time teacher at the Berry Academy of Dance, bringing new skills, choreography, and his experience to benefit our pupils. We couldn’t be prouder of his achievements and we cannot wait to see him taking up his harem trousers and magic carpet very soon!

A huge well done to our fabulous Alexandra O’Brien who has qualified for the IDTA’s prestigious Miss Dance of Great Britain 2017!

This will be Alex’s second time competing on the huge stage at Blackpool’s Winter Gardens, this year with a new routine, Crunchy Granola.

Alex has been offered a place at Urdang Academy, and we can’t wait to cheer her on alongside Rebecca, Bree and Jack in June. Congratulations gorgeous girl!

Congratulations are in order for our pupils who have won parts in Bradfield School‘s production of Bugsy Malone!

Well done to Lucy Holcroft, Eleanor Jackson and Renée Warren who will be performing in April, we’re always glad to hear of what you get up to outside of class! Eleanor will be playing Bugsy’s romantic interest, Blousey, while Lucy will be playing the part of Fizzy.

Happy 18th Birthday Bree!

The first of our Senior girls is stepping into the world of legal drinking today as our lovely Bree Ella Quinton turns 18.

dsc_0028Bree began dancing at our school at the ripe age of 3 years old when her mum and former pupil Stacy brought her along. Her distinguished dance career had its humble beginnings from her first appearance as a little chicken in Our Favourite Things 2002 at the University Drama Studio and her first competition dance age 4 to Out of Town, to the heights (so far) of performing as a Semi-Finalist in Miss Dance of Great Britain 2016 and winning the IDTA’s Modern Jazz Performer Award.

Bree has been nominated to compete in the IDTA’s Theatre Dance Awards every year since 2012, and in 2015 was the first pupil in the school’s history to get nominated in all four disciplines in the same year: Ballet, Tap, Theatre Craft & Modern Jazz.
We were particularly overwhelmed with pride earlier this year when Bree performed at the IDTA’s Theatre Dance Awards, the blue ribbon event of our dancing world, to win the Modern Jazz Performers Award. She was asked to represent the IDTA at the Theatre Dance Council International’s British Championships.

Recently, Miss Quinton took 5th place at Danum White Rose Championships in the Ballet category while also making it through to the semi-finals of the Song & Dance section.

Over her time with us, Bree has performed on both Sheffield Theatres’ stages, appearing in pantomimes from the age of 7 at the Lyceum and also appearing in the Crucible’s production of Kes in 2014.

History repeats itself – Bree’s first competition trio, Sunny Side of the Street… coincidentally her mum’s first trio too.

By June 2017, Bree will also have had the honour and achievement of competing in Miss Dance of Great Britain three times. We will be delighted to support her and Jack there next June.

For the time being, Bree is concentrating on her A Levels and applying for dance colleges. Happy 18th Birthday Miss Quinton, you’ve given us a lifetime of proud and happy memories, and we hope you go on to create more.

From the West End to our Sheffield dance school…

We had a simply fantastic time last Sunday with Enric, a cast member of the International Cats Tour, who led a brilliant workshop for our pupils.

We were encouraged to get into feline character and learned a routine direct from the world-renowned show, as Enric taught us the Jellicle Ball. The professional choreography was fabulous and our pupils picked it up really well.

Many thanks to Enric for taking this class, we all had a great time and we wish you the very best with the tour.

We hope you enjoy the slideshow of photos below, there is also a video available on our Facebook page, please click here.

Once Upon A Time 2017

We’re thrilled that two of our pupils will be appearing in Worksop Light Operatic Society’s Christmas pantomime, Once Upon A Time, this January! Well done to Kodi and Callie Cunningham for winning places in what is sure to be a magical Christmas treat!

Kodi will be playing the Genie while Callie will be a dancer. The show will take place from the 11-15 January 2017 at the Acorn Theatre, Worksop.

This takes our current tally of children performing in local pantomimes to 27, and we couldn’t be prouder!

Tickets will be available soon and updates can be found on the Society’s Facebook page, please click here. There will be group booking rates on offer.

Fundraising Frenzy

In September we launched our Fundraising Committee, made up of parents of the school and staff members, who have been working tirelessly to raise money for the school for the subsidy of show costumes and a trip to Disneyland Paris in summer 2015 where 30 pupils will travel to perform there.

Through many clever initiatives, ranging from collecting 20 pence pieces in Smartie tubes to a Weekly Bonus Ball we are very proud to report a rather fruitful four months from the Fundraising Committee!

A Bonfire Party held by the Jackson family at Greenhead Housefarm helped begin the fundraising, we had a great time with special visitor Mr Claus at our Children’s Christmas Disco and we also enjoyed a fantastic Christmas Craft Event. Many of you attended our Christmas Concert, with over 220 adult tickets sold (and over 250 people squeezed into St Thomas More Community Centre). To round it off there was what Miss Marie has described as “the best hour of my life”, carol singing at Parson Cross Asda. Our pupils, staff and parents gave shoppers some musical cheer and the festive mood helped raise lots of money from the very generous people who passed by.

2015 01 Scholarship Noms

These events are only the highlights of course, and with lots of different scale projects, our Fundraising Committee has raised a fantastic amount of money so far. Corporate sponsorship has also been secured from Crucible Homes and Lettings, who will be providing the kit for the pupils travelling to Disneyland Paris.

The committee met last Saturday, and they have lots planned for 2015. Watch out for events, including a race night planned for the end of February.

Congratulations to the Committee leaders Andrea, Gemma, Charise and Lindsay and the rest of the Fundraising Committee, what a way to start! A huge thank you to parents, staff and friends of the school who are supporting us in our activities, either through donating raffle prizes or attending our events. Your time and generosity are greatly appreciated and will help us to provide a more affordable dance experience for each pupil.

We can’t wait to see what happens next… onwards and upwards!
